The impact of christopher columbus (RUHI)

COLLEGE BOARD THEME: My topic applies to college board theme 1 which is      Interactions Between Humans and the Environment: Demography, Migration, Patterns of Settlement, and Technology. The travels of Columbus applies to Demography because the lands he found helped gain insight on land other than the Eurasian land mass. This theme also applies to the interactions because the interactions he had with natives allowed him to better understand their way of life.

IDEA OF SAILING WEST
  •  Came up with the idea of sailing west
  •  His idea was popular among Europeans
  •  Many geographers in Europe weren't aware of the Americas
  •  Many said that his voyage would be fruitless due to the long travel
Analyzation: His ideas were doubted by many but such a new feat was considered extremely popular among the Europeans. This led to many debates about the validity of his voyage
VOYAGES
  •  The King of Portugal refused to fund his trip
  •  King Fernando and Isabel of Spain agreed to help him out with his trip
  •  Set sail in 1492
  •  Stopped at the Canary Islands to restock on supplies
  • Ships passed Atlantic Ocean and finally reached land in San Salvador
  • After his voyage to the Americas he made 3 more voyages to the Caribbean area

Analyzation: The many trips he took to the land helped him ensure that there really was another land. It allowed him to interact better and gain more insight on the new lands.
WHAT HE BROUGHT BACK
  • Didn't bring back any gold, silk, spices, or any other valuables
  • He stood by the notion that he had reached Asia

IMPACT
  • News of his voyages spread like wildfire
  • He started a frenzy of voyages towards the western hemisphere
  • Many voyagers soon also discovered that there are lands beyond what they know
  • His voyage helped European awareness of other lands and continents
COMPARISON
The Voyage of Columbus vs. Silk Road Travels
  • The motive behind both the voyage and the Silk Road was to be able to facilitate long distance trade. The silk roads allowed trade in the any countries along side it and Columbus hoped to trade in Asian markets.
  • Silk road had various sea lanes for trade and Columbus traveled on sea.
  • The main desired products on the silk roads were gold, silks, and spices and Christopher hoped to discover the same things on his voyage. The silk road was a long intricate path that couldn't be traveled without breaks and Columbus and his crew often took many pit-stops along the way.
